Fourteen years of faces

I started in Hollywood, in hair and makeup. Fourteen years of it — film and television, early calls, and faces under every kind of light a crew can throw at them.

That's where I learned bone structure. You cannot fake a brow on a camera that's eighteen inches from someone's face, and you cannot make the same brow work on two different women just because the shape looked good on paper. You learn to read the skull, the hairline, the way the eye sits, and the way a face moves when it talks. You also learn to work quickly without ever making the person in the chair feel rushed.

2014, and the needle

In 2014 I moved to permanent makeup. It's the same eye and a different craft. Putting color on skin for a day and placing it in skin for years are not the same problem.

Pigment behaves differently in oily skin than in dry, in mature skin than in young, and in scar tissue than in anything else. It shifts as it heals, and the direction it shifts in depends on how deep it sits and which pigment family it came from. Twelve years in, that is still the part of the job I study. It's the whole job, really — everything else is drawing.

Venice Beach, 2017

I founded CandiBrows in Venice Beach in 2017 and built the practice there.

Old Town Clovis came later, and it suits the work better. A quiet street, a private room, and clients who planned the appointment and drove in for it rather than wandering past a window. The pace here is the pace this work actually wants.

One artist, start to finish

There's no front desk, no junior artist, and no rotating staff. You consult with me, I map your brows, I do the work, and I do your touch-up.

That matters more than it sounds like it should. If something isn't healing the way I expected, I'm the one who notices, because I'm the one who saw it go in. Nobody has to read someone else's notes and guess. And you never sit down opposite a stranger who has to be told your history again.

It also means my calendar is finite. I'd rather that than the alternative.

The artist other artists learn from

I teach nano hair strokes to permanent makeup artists who are already working and already taking clients. That's a fair measure of a technique: the people who do this for a living come and ask to be shown how I do it.
